A former Metropolitan Police commissioner has blamed Croydon’s knife culture on soft sentencing in the courts.

Croydon conservative councillor, David Osland, has created a scrutiny committee to decide on what action the council can take to combat youth violence in the borough.

The former top cop will meet with licensees, victims, representatives from the legal system, police officers and reformed perpetrators to find out what solutions they have for the rising scourge of knife attacks in the borough.

Furious with the sentences youngsters receive in court and the restrictions placed on officers on the ground, Coun Osland said his main aim was to pressurise the Government into taking a tougher stance on those that carry knives.

He said: “This is not just the concern of the police and the council, youngsters are worried, their parents are worried and residents are worried.

“We need to find and identify radical solutions we can use to reduce the amount of youngsters carrying knives.

“Zero tolerance should mean zero tolerance and central Government should understand this.

“If young people are arrested carrying a knife they need to know they have done something wrong and need to be punished.

“Kids are arrested and laugh at the sentence they receive in youth court. They are back on the street the same afternoon after being handed a caution.”

Coun Osland added: “One of the powers of the scrutiny committee is to hold the council to account on anything we think they are failing on.

“The council has a duty to the people it is employed to look after and if we find they are failing in that duty we will take action.

“The committee will not be an opportunity for people to come and make speeches, we have had enough of those.”

They need to be locked up, but it seems that our prisons are too full. Build more, perhaps??

I don't remember a DAC Osland.

It's not just the judicial system that is letting the side down.

There is a plethora of single mothers who are beyond raising children because a majority of them are children themselves.

The baby will grow up unwanted, uncared for and used to get bungs out of the benefit system.

They will not know family love, discipline, respect for themselves or others, nor a father's love.

Letting punishment fit the crime is one thing - it's how Judge Lord Carmont sorted out Glasgow's underworld. The effects of ten years for possession of a weapon then would have the same effect as now.

Bang 'em up and educate them whilst inside.

Agreed. That is where National Service would help, they have to bring it back. The Police and the Courts are the cleaner uppers if you like, we have to tackle the course and bring something into effect that will help these young kids. National Service or a Form of is an answer.

The author of this story seems to have retrospectively promoted this ex-police officer. "Commisioner" suggests that he was THE Commissioner of the Metropolitan police, which he was not. Even Bob Peel, obviously in THE JOB, does not remember him as a Deputy Commissioner. Has someone slightly "guilded the lilly"?
If Councillor Osland wants to use his previous employment to gain credit to his current position, he at least ensure that his correct previous rank is quoted, not an enhanced one.

Does his former rank actually matter??? I don't care who or what he was - he seems to be talking sense.

How can you pin point single mothers as the route for this. Yes i believe its partly the parents fault but to single out single MOTHERS is hardly fair... Also how can you say that if you are raised by one parent that they wont know family love. I didnt know a family must consist of two parents? Bad parenting can be two parents or one.

And before you ask i do have children...and im married
